Matt Wilkinson

Matt Wilkinson’s culinary journey is a testament to the unexpected paths life can lead us on. Hailing from the quaint town of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England, Matt’s early life was intertwined with the world of pubs and hospitality. Raised above a pub by his father, who worked in the industry, Matt’s exposure to this vibrant atmosphere laid the foundation for his future endeavours.

Academic pursuits were never his forte, but a pivotal encounter with his tutor, John Stevenson, altered the course of Matt’s life. This led him into the bustling kitchens of restaurants in London and Edinburgh, where his culinary journey truly began. Initially hesitant about cooking, Matt found himself drawn to the heat of the kitchen and the art of crafting delectable dishes.

Matt’s move to Melbourne in 2000 was a pivotal chapter in his culinary story. The decision to head down under was fuelled by a desire for adventure and exploration. After globe-trotting through European destinations then India, he found himself captivated by the vibrant culinary scene in Melbourne.

In Melbourne, Matt’s talent and passion flourished.

He rapidly climbed the ranks, from Sous Chef at Vue de Monde to Head Chef at prestigious establishments like Circa, The Prince. Then opening the famed eatery Pope Joan in Brunswick East in 2010. His culinary journey has also involved collaborations with well-known brands like Montalto Winery, Four Pillars Gin, Cobram Estate and Grill’d, as well as the launch of his own Mr Wilkinson’s cookbooks and food products.

Since 2021 Matt has spearheaded his joint venture BBcrew Foods developing and creating food product brands Street BBQ, Smokin South and Wings of Fury. Alongside a role as Chef Ambassador at Flavour Makers, a company that his business partner Adrian Cester founded.

Matt’s unique journey as a chef, entrepreneur, and author is reflected in his creative and approachable culinary style. From a small town in England to the bustling kitchens of Melbourne, Matt’s journey is a tale of passion, resilience and an unquenchable thirst for culinary exploration. His story resonates with those who believe in the transformative power of following one’s passion, no matter how unconventional the path may be.
